Pirating with PTAC Proposal - Workshop August 2025 (US Letter).png

Pirating with PTAC - CANCELLED

All workshops will be held at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak, NY. Registration is required!

August (aka Arrrr-gust) is International Pirate’s Month! (According to various libraries and google results, this is true - so who are we to deny it?)

PTAC drew inspiration from MTI's Pirate Certification in planning this series. To encourage students to take PE & Wellness courses, MIT began offering a Pirate Certificate for its students in 2011. Students are required to take the following courses: Archery, Fencing, Pistol (Air Pistol or Rifle), and Sailing. *Both the MIT Pirate Certificate & the PTAC Pirate Series are for entertainment purposes only and does not give the recipient license to engage in piracy or any pirate activities.

We decided to focus on pirates the best way that we know how - theatrically and artistically! We hope you'll join us for some or all of our workshops this August!

Swashbuckling Sword Fighting:

Stage Combat with Michael Serpe

Saturday August 2 @ 2 PM

Ages 14+

Ahoy, aspiring pirates and theatrical thrill-seekers! Join professional stage combat instructor Michael Serpe for an action-packed workshop in the art of swashbuckling swordplay. Learn the foundations of safe, dramatic sword fighting just like you see on stage and screen — from footwork and flourishes to timing and teamwork. Our swords may not be the sharpest blades on the seas, but they’re sharp enough for stage combat — and while they won’t draw blood, they will draw applause.

Whether you're a budding actor, a curious teen, or a pirate at heart, this hands-on experience is sure to make your inner buccaneer cheer. No experience necessary — just a sense of adventure and a willingness to learn!

Spaces are limited, so register soon before this ship sets sail!

Sea Songs & Shanties

Saturday August 16 @ 2 PM

Ages 12+

Heave ho, ye scallywags, and join us for an afternoon of rollicking rhythm and maritime melody! In this workshop your “shantyman” Sharon Wolff, archivist and musician to landlubbers, will guide you through the rich history and cultural significance of sea shanties — the work songs of sailors that once echoed across the oceans.

Enjoy a live performance of sea songs, raise your voice in lively singalongs, and even try your hand at writing your very own shanty verses. Whether you're a music lover, history buff, or pirate in disguise, this session promises a wave of fun and inspiration.

No musical experience necessary — just bring your best yo ho ho (maybe keep the rum at home…) and the willingness to learn and play!
