Patrick Hamilton's Gas Light is a chilling psychological thriller that delves into the dark corners of manipulation and deceit. This classic play is often regarded as the origin of the term "gaslighting," which refers to a form of psychological abuse where a person is made to doubt their own perceptions and reality.
In Victorian London, Bella Manningham lives a seemingly quiet life with her husband in their well-appointed home. Yet behind the genteel facade, Bella begins to experience strange occurrences—unexplained noises, misplaced objects, and an unsettling flicker in the gaslights. As her sense of reality wavers, Bella struggles to hold on to her peace of mind while those around her offer conflicting explanations. When the enigmatic Inspector Rough arrives, his probing questions deepen the uncertainty and throw every motive into doubt. Is Bella truly losing her grip on reality, or is something far more dangerous unfolding in the shadows of her own home?
If you or someone you know is in an unsafe relationship, it’s important to seek help. There are resources and support available to provide guidance and assistance. Remember, you are not alone, and there are people who want to help!
